Uber is going into the Dow Transports on Monday, marking the first change to the index since Dec. 7, 2021, when Old Dominion replaced Kansas City Southern. Under Dow Theory, the Transports should confirm a new high in the Dow Industrials. Uber is a funny add because unlike many of the other index components, it's not really a shipping company. The add likely reflects the Dow Transports index committee's belief that this is a transportation company, even if it just shuttles people instead of packages. This follows a well-known pattern called the S & P inclusion effect.

While the major equity averages were rallying off their October 2023 lows, many gambling names did not participate in the rally. DraftKings (DKNG) DKNG certainly has the most established uptrend in the group, having sustained a fairly consistent uptrend through much of 2023. Higher highs and higher lows have marked the next 14 months, forming a classic Dow Theory uptrend. The October 2023 low was noteworthy in that the stock found support right at the August low around $26. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) WYNN has undergone a similar reversal off a December 2023 low, and also has recently broken above the crucial 200-day moving average.

Then we'll review what I think will happen into year end and a possible market hedge idea. FedEx gave us a sense of how things are looking when they reported earnings Tuesday evening, and it wasn't good. We got all of them out of FedEx earnings, they hit a dinger, in a bad way, which disappointed the Street to say the least. Market downside reversal I was surprised when, after dipping slightly on the open the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied mildly. Hedge The S & P 500 SPDR Trust (SPY) January $460 puts were $2.98 as of the close Wednesday.

A decline in transportation stocks is sending a worrying signal about the broader stock market. Transportation stocks are viewed as a leading indicator because they point to the movement of goods around the country. AdvertisementAdvertisementA steady decline in transportation stocks is sending a worrying signal about the broader stock market and its chances to stage a year-end rally. If companies are seeing a slowdown in growth and their stock prices fall, it could be a grim warning for the rest of the economy and stock market. AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd if the latter happens, crucial support levels would be broken and investors' highly anticipated year-end rally in the stock market, partly explained by bullish seasonals, would be on thin ice.

Dow theory: a primer The rules around the Dow Theory were formulated more than 120 years ago by Charles Dow himself (though he himself never used the term Dow Theory). "Dow Theory was formulated when the Dow Industrials were stuff makers, and the railroads were stuff movers," Tom McClellan, editor of the McClellan Market Report, told me. New Dow Theory also confirms a new high There have been attempts to formulate a "New Dow Theory." Tuesday, the S & P 500 closed at 4,554 (up 19% this year), and the Nasdaq closed at 14,354 (up 37% year-to-date). The S & P 500 is up 9% since May 1.

There is a bearish divergence developing between the Dow Jones Transportation Average and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. While the transports index made a higher high in January, the transportation average did not. Dow Theory is a more than 100-year old technical indicator that suggests if transportation companies are doing well, so should the broader economy. Dow theory suggests that the relationship between the two indexes could send a broader signal to investors about the future direction of the stock market. "These bearish divergences into late 2022 and early 2023 show a disconnected equity market, keeping the bearish signal for Dow Theory from early 2022 intact," Suttmeier said.
